Did you know that Kentucky’s Medicaid program is one of only six states that do not provide coverage for smoking cessation services? At a time when Medicaid enrollment and expenditures are growing at an alarming rate, this is truly a missed opportunity. As many as 285,000 Medicaid recipients smoke and like the majority of smokers, they want to quit. Smoking cessation services not only save lives, but they also save money. Instead of questioning how the program can afford to cover these services, the real question is how can they afford not to?
The American Heart Association has worked on this issue for the last several years. In continuation of these efforts we are co-hosting a rally and press conference on Wednesday, October 21st in Frankfort. The event will be held at 12:15 pm in Room 125 in the Capitol Annex.
