  • Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CPR!

In 1960, a group of resuscitation pioneers combined mouth-to-mouth breathing with chest compressions to create Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the lifesaving action we now call “CPR.” This action, when provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double – even triple – a victim’s chance of survival.

Join us throughout this anniversary year as we celebrate CPR and the people whose lives it has saved over the last 50 years!

  • You're the Cure

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives. Just be willing to deliver a lifesaving message to public officials whenever you can. Maybe you've already participated with the American Heart Association before by walking in a Heart Walk. Or perhaps you've helped organize a gala event. Maybe you even helped someone survive a heart attack or stroke. At moments like these, You're the Cure. Even if you're someone who wants to get involved for the first time, you can be part of the cure.

Let's Make Healthcare Better!

Monday, October 12, 2009

The American Heart Association supports Congress’ efforts to reform our nation’s healthcare system. As a leading patient advocate, our association supports reforms that make healthcare more affordable, adequate, and accessible to all Americans. On the last day of September I joined volunteers from across the country on Capitol Hill to send a clear message, Americans need reform this year of our broken system. Too many of our friends, neighbors, and family members forgo preventative health services, skip doses of needed medications, or struggle with mounting bills from a “pre-existing” condition

I spent much of the day with a young woman from Delaware who was born with a congenital heart defect and at the time was the youngest recipient of a pacemaker at one day old. In our current system, she is practically shut out of starting her own business and pursuing entrepreneurial ventures because in the small and individual health insurance markets she’s uninsurable for her “pre-existing” condition, if insurance could be obtained at all. Her career choices are thereby limited primarily to large companies or the public sector. The health reforms that the American Heart Association is supporting would change this and make health care more accessible to all Americans. Get involved @ www.heartsforhealthcare.org.
