  • Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CPR!

In 1960, a group of resuscitation pioneers combined mouth-to-mouth breathing with chest compressions to create Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the lifesaving action we now call “CPR.” This action, when provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double – even triple – a victim’s chance of survival.

Join us throughout this anniversary year as we celebrate CPR and the people whose lives it has saved over the last 50 years!

  • You're the Cure

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives. Just be willing to deliver a lifesaving message to public officials whenever you can. Maybe you've already participated with the American Heart Association before by walking in a Heart Walk. Or perhaps you've helped organize a gala event. Maybe you even helped someone survive a heart attack or stroke. At moments like these, You're the Cure. Even if you're someone who wants to get involved for the first time, you can be part of the cure.

On May 4th, over 70 You’re the Cure volunteers ascended on our State’s Capitol in Harrisburg to educate our lawmakers about lifesaving legislation that would help reduce heart disease and stroke. Under the Capitol Dome, the halls were buzzing with lots of other group activities and press conferences. But amidst all of this, You’re the Cure volunteers, all dressed in red and delivering life-saving messages, made quite the impact that was noticed by many inside the Capitol!

Throughout the day, volunteers met with over 90 legislators or legislative staff members asking for support of three bills: House Bill 816, which would lay the foundation for a state-based Heart Disease and Stroke Program; House Bill 1572, which would establish nutrition standards for snack foods and beverages sold in schools; and Senate Bill 1322, which would expand Pennsylvania’s AED Good Samaritan to protect AED program facilitators.

A press conference was held to highlight the epidemic of childhood obesity and why it’s so important for children and parents to be advocates for their own health. Messages emphasized making small changes like being more physically active and eating healthier foods, and highlighted how schools can be part of this solution.
Overall, PA Advocacy Day 2010 was a huge success in a variety of ways: it raised more awareness about heart disease and stroke in the halls of our State Capitol, it helped to gain support of several of our public policy initiatives, and it gave our volunteers a chance to meet each other, share their personal stories and build relationships. We received a lot of feedback from legislators and legislative staff that they enjoyed meeting with their constituents and appreciated the information that was given to them.

We know how precious your time is and we THANK YOU for sharing some of your time in Harrisburg to help the American Heart Association’s advance its mission through policy change. We look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s Advocacy Day, which will be announced in the near future!
