  • Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CPR!

In 1960, a group of resuscitation pioneers combined mouth-to-mouth breathing with chest compressions to create Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the lifesaving action we now call “CPR.” This action, when provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double – even triple – a victim’s chance of survival.

Join us throughout this anniversary year as we celebrate CPR and the people whose lives it has saved over the last 50 years!

  • You're the Cure

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives. Just be willing to deliver a lifesaving message to public officials whenever you can. Maybe you've already participated with the American Heart Association before by walking in a Heart Walk. Or perhaps you've helped organize a gala event. Maybe you even helped someone survive a heart attack or stroke. At moments like these, You're the Cure. Even if you're someone who wants to get involved for the first time, you can be part of the cure.

Tobacco 101 Training

Wednesday, August 4, 2010
The Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium at Emory University has put together an online toolkit Tobacco 101 Training.

The Training Kit provides all the materials needed for someone to deliver a two-day training to public health practitioners who want the information and tools necessary to understand tobacco control programs and the strategies used to reduce tobacco use and related disease. The training kit is designed to help a trainer provide an interactive experience involving lectures with visual aids, group exercises, guided group discussions, and individual learning activities. The Kit can also be used as a self-teaching tool for individuals who want to master the fundamentals of tobacco control. Click here to see and download the Training Kit material, including PowerPoint presentations, script, Presenter’s Guidebook, Essential Resources Guide, fact sheets, and activity work sheets.

The updated content covers the following topics:
  • The history of tobacco and its use.
  • The prevalence of tobacco use and its effects on health and society.
  • Obstacles to overcoming tobacco use, including the biology of nicotine addiction, engineering of tobacco products, media campaigns and advertising by the tobacco industry, and social attitudes toward tobacco use.
  • The components of CDC’s Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs and the MPOWER model for effective policy and other population-based interventions to achieve long-term reduction in tobacco use.
  • Essential resources for programs to control tobacco use.
