The purpose is not to declare Delaware County perfect, shame Scioto County or leave Franklin County feeling like the forgotten middle child.
The researchers behind county-by-county health rankings released today say there's room for improvement from top to bottom.
"The goal of this project is to mobilize action to improve. The data that we give is just a snapshot, a single place in time. It's to sort of get people's attention," said Bridget Booske, senior scientist at the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute in Madison. The institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, based in Princeton, N.J., are in their second year of rankings.
Their analysis, which relies on data collected at the community level, ranks counties in two ways. The researchers look at health outcomes - premature death, quality of life and poor birth results - and at factors that contribute to health, including smoking, unsafe sex, access to health care, education and environment. It is the most comprehensive report of its kind.
