Congratulations to the Ohio State Board of Education! At the July 2011 meeting, an important milestone was achieved when the Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt a resolution endorsing 100 percent tobacco-free school campuses Through this action, the State Board is recommending that Ohio’s school districts strongly consider adopting the policy or one similar.
According to the 2008 Youth Tobacco Survey, 30.1 percent of high school students were likely to be current tobacco users compared to 11.2 percent of middle school students. These usage rates point out the importance of districts adopting comprehensive tobacco free school policies that exclude all tobacco use by students, staff and visitors on all school grounds.
In the 2011-12 school year, the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) will provide additional guidance to districts on how to establish tobacco free school environments.more . . .
