  • Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CPR!

In 1960, a group of resuscitation pioneers combined mouth-to-mouth breathing with chest compressions to create Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the lifesaving action we now call “CPR.” This action, when provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double – even triple – a victim’s chance of survival.

Join us throughout this anniversary year as we celebrate CPR and the people whose lives it has saved over the last 50 years!

  • You're the Cure

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives. Just be willing to deliver a lifesaving message to public officials whenever you can. Maybe you've already participated with the American Heart Association before by walking in a Heart Walk. Or perhaps you've helped organize a gala event. Maybe you even helped someone survive a heart attack or stroke. At moments like these, You're the Cure. Even if you're someone who wants to get involved for the first time, you can be part of the cure.

When advocacy staff reached out to Charleston AHA Board Member, Andy Young, to join us for our 2011 Congressional Lobby Day, we didn’t realize what a fantastic heart-health advocate we’d be gaining. “Andy’s passion and commitment came through in his meetings with policymakers during our visit to Capitol Hill,” said WV Government Relations Director, Chuck Hamsher. “That really makes a difference.”

In addition to being a CPA with Dixon Hughes Goodman, a You’re the Cure advocate and a very active AHA Board member, Andy is a member of the 2011 Heart Walk Executive Leadership Team, was Chairperson of the 2010 Heart Walk and an ELT member for the 2009 Heart Walk. Andy is also the Charleston area My Life Check Champion, actively communicating to his associates and other area businesses the importance of knowing their numbers and completing their own My Life Check assessment.

According to Holly Bagyi, Charleston Senior Director of Development, “Andy is a fantastic volunteer. He has a personal connection with heart disease, and his passion is evident in all he does for the American Heart Association.” Thank you Andy for making the American Heart Association a part of your busy schedule!
