A stroke occurs every 40 seconds and someone dies from a stroke every four minutes. Although treatments are available to improve the clinical outcomes of stroke, many acute care hospitals lack the necessary staff and equipment to optimally triage and treat stroke patients. Primary Stroke Centers are those acute care hospitals that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. House Bill 1400 will help in this process by requiring the Department of Health to recognize primary stroke centers in Pennsylvania and provide a list of primary stroke centers to all EMS providers. The bill further emphasizes the EMS community as a critical component in the development of a strong stroke system of care.
