  • Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CPR!

In 1960, a group of resuscitation pioneers combined mouth-to-mouth breathing with chest compressions to create Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the lifesaving action we now call “CPR.” This action, when provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double – even triple – a victim’s chance of survival.

Join us throughout this anniversary year as we celebrate CPR and the people whose lives it has saved over the last 50 years!

  • You're the Cure

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives. Just be willing to deliver a lifesaving message to public officials whenever you can. Maybe you've already participated with the American Heart Association before by walking in a Heart Walk. Or perhaps you've helped organize a gala event. Maybe you even helped someone survive a heart attack or stroke. At moments like these, You're the Cure. Even if you're someone who wants to get involved for the first time, you can be part of the cure.

In just two short years, Dr. Juan Villafane has quickly become one of Kentucky’s most passionate advocates in the fight against heart disease and stroke. Dr. Villafane, a pediatric cardiologist and the current Governor of the Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, has made heart-healthy policy change a top priority, with his current focus on the prevention of childhood obesity and youth tobacco use.

Dr. Villafane has been instrumental in establishing an active partnership between the Kentucky Chapter of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association and has done an outstanding job encouraging other physicians to get involved in helping to change policy through public advocacy. Under Dr. Villafane’s leadership, for the past two years the ACC and AHA have partnered for our annual Kentucky Advocacy Day held each February at the Capitol in Frankfort. This year’s event drew over 100 participants, including several physicians, who gathered to meet with their lawmakers in support of bills to improve stroke care, expand access to opportunities for physical activity and create a smoke-free Kentucky. Dr. Villafane’s advocacy efforts extend to being a member of the AHA’s Kentucky advocacy committee and chair of a coalition that works on tobacco control and obesity issues.

Whether calling his lawmakers, attending legislative meetings--and urging his colleagues to do the same--or by responding to online action alerts, Dr. Villafane’s persistence has been a critical component to our success. American Heart Association staff are honored to work side-by-side with him as we continue to move toward a healthier future for Kentucky’s kids.
