The legislation would amend the No Child Left Behind Act to increase children’s physical activity throughout the school day and ensure that they learn how to live healthy lives through exercise and diet.
“We commend U.S. Representatives Ron Kind (D-WI), Zach Wamp (R-TN) and Chairman George Miller (D-CA) for their leadership in moving the bill forward. With their help, we are one step closer to making daily, quality physical education a reality for all America’s children,” said AHA CEO Nancy Brown in an April 22 statement.

The American Heart Association supports the Fitness Integrated with Teaching (FIT) Kids Act, which would require schools to report on the quality and quantity of physical education they provide, and give schools opportunities to increase physical activity. Every elementary school child needs at least 150 minutes per week of physical education, and middle and high school students need 225 minutes per week.
