  • Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CPR!

In 1960, a group of resuscitation pioneers combined mouth-to-mouth breathing with chest compressions to create Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the lifesaving action we now call “CPR.” This action, when provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double – even triple – a victim’s chance of survival.

Join us throughout this anniversary year as we celebrate CPR and the people whose lives it has saved over the last 50 years!

  • You're the Cure

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives. Just be willing to deliver a lifesaving message to public officials whenever you can. Maybe you've already participated with the American Heart Association before by walking in a Heart Walk. Or perhaps you've helped organize a gala event. Maybe you even helped someone survive a heart attack or stroke. At moments like these, You're the Cure. Even if you're someone who wants to get involved for the first time, you can be part of the cure.

Newborn Pulse Ox Bill Passes!

You're the Cure GRA On Wednesday, May 9, 2012
Thanks in large part to volunteer outreach to lawmakers and a fantastic group of "Heart Moms," a bill that will save the lives of many of West Virginia's smallest citizens passed the legislature and was signed by Governor Tomblin this past session!

Some newborns with heart defects can initially appear healthy and are sent home with their families only to find out--sometimes too late--that there's a problem. Pulse oximetry is a simple, inexpensive, painless bedside test to determine pulse rate and the amount of oxygen in a baby’s blood, which can help detect a critical congenital heart defect (CCHD) before a baby is released from the hospital.

Thank you for your efforts to see this important bill through! Together we are making a difference in the heart-health of West Virginia!

Efforts Begin in Ohio for Pulse Ox

Ohio is beginning work to add the pulse oximetry screening to the Newborn Screening Panel. The easy and inexpensive test is the best way to detect congenital heart defects.  Recently, West Virginia followed other leading states and passed this important legislation.  Ohio hopes to be next!

Great news! Thanks in large part to advocates reaching out to our lawmakers, a bill that could save the lives of many of West Virginia's smallest citizens passed the legislature and is awaiting the Governor's signature!
