By advocating for routine pulse oximetry screenings for all newborns after 24 hours of life, but before hospital discharge, we can help detect critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) before it’s too late.
Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive test that estimates the percentage of hemoglobin in blood that is saturated with oxygen, and when performed on newborns in delivery centers, is effective at detecting life-threatening congenital heart defects that might otherwise go unnoticed.
