  • Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CPR!

In 1960, a group of resuscitation pioneers combined mouth-to-mouth breathing with chest compressions to create Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, the lifesaving action we now call “CPR.” This action, when provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double – even triple – a victim’s chance of survival.

Join us throughout this anniversary year as we celebrate CPR and the people whose lives it has saved over the last 50 years!

  • You're the Cure

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives. Just be willing to deliver a lifesaving message to public officials whenever you can. Maybe you've already participated with the American Heart Association before by walking in a Heart Walk. Or perhaps you've helped organize a gala event. Maybe you even helped someone survive a heart attack or stroke. At moments like these, You're the Cure. Even if you're someone who wants to get involved for the first time, you can be part of the cure.

Advocates Take to the Ohio Statehouse

You're the Cure GRA On Wednesday, March 28, 2012
Ohio’s March 14th Advocacy Day was extra exciting this year.  Dressed in red, around 80 advocates from across the state descended upon Columbus and the statehouse for meetings with their legislators.  With three priority issues, advocates had very full meetings.  While the evaluations are still being reviewed, all indications are the event was a great success and helped move our priorities further.  In addition, many advocates took the opportunity to begin their meeting follow up by writing specific messages to their legislators based on the meetings and discussion.

The day also saw a proponent hearing in the House Health and Aging Committee on HB 427, the Ohio Stroke Bill.  The AHA had three advocates give testimony, which sparked thoughtful questions from committee members.  Our thanks to Dr. Irene Katzan, Dr. Torbey, and survivor Jim Bischoff for their compelling testimony.

Ohio advocates certainly made a big impact that will be felt as we continue to work on these key issues – tobacco prevention and cessation funding, stroke systems of care and state health education standards.

PA Advocacy Day: Save the Date and Make a Difference!

You're the Cure GRA On Wednesday, October 26, 2011
Please join us on Monday, February 6th, 2012 for our annual Advocacy Day at the State Capitol in Harrisburg.

It’s important that we have advocates from as many legislative districts as possible – so, Register Now! to come make your voice heard!

Did you know that bystanders who aid someone in an emergency using CPR and businesses who want to place an AED on their premises are not protected from liability under the current PA Good Samaritan Law? Advocacy Day will highlight the problems with this loophole in current law and participants will meet with their legislators to advocate support for Senate Bill 351, which would remove these barriers, making it safe for Pennsylvanians to render aid without fear of liability.

In addition to meeting with your legislators to generate support for SB 351, Advocacy Day will include a morning training session to learn more about the issue, a press conference, and other activities throughout the day to celebrate February as American Heart Month and National Wear Red for Women Day.

More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to the date. So for now, all you need to do is mark your calendar for February 6th, RSVP, then plan to join other advocates in what promises to be an exciting day at our State Capitol.

You're the Cure On the Hill 2009

You're the Cure GRA On Thursday, April 30, 2009
Tuesday, April 21st, nearly 500 You’re the Cure advocates from every state in the nation converged on Capitol Hill to ask their federal lawmakers to make the No. 1 and No. 3 killers in America, heart disease and stroke, a No. 1 priority. These enthusiastic volunteer-advocates participated in an incredible 354 meetings on Capitol Hill that day and brought with them powerful stories to share with their legislators. Watch our You’re the Cure on the Hill highlight video here!

RIGHT: Small but mighty, the DE Delegation (from left, Dr. Lisa Mealy, Diane Gutierrez, Jonathan Kirch) met with Representative Mike Castle.
Representing the Great Rivers Affiliate were 51 survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers and staff all dressed in red. Each of these dedicated advocates took time out of their busy schedules to travel to Washington, D.C., to urge their legislators to support three primary issues critical to improving the heart-health of our nation: increased National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for research, increased Centers for Disease Control (CDC) funding to address prevention and treatment and healthcare reform so that all Americans have adequate, accessible and affordable healthcare.

Volunteers urged passage of meaningful healthcare reform, including coverage without regard to pre-existing conditions which is a serious concern for heart disease and stroke survivors. They also explained that the NIH invests only 4% of its budget on heart disease research and a mere 1% on stroke research. In addition, they shared that only 14 states receive CDC funding for state-tailored programs to prevent cardiovascular disease. They asked that their legislators sign a letter to the President asking him to make increased funding for heart disease and stroke research and prevention a priority in his budget next year. And what a success: by the next day, several legislators heard our message and had already signed on! It’s not too late! You can still help by sending your message of support!

Many thanks to all our advocates, those who joined us in D.C., and those of you who continually make your voices heard by sending email messages and making phone calls and in-district legislative visits. You are ALL a vital part of the Cure for heart disease and stroke!

AHA Advocates are the Cure at the Kentucky Capitol

You're the Cure GRA On Tuesday, March 31, 2009
More than 60 volunteers and staff joined us in Frankfort on February 10th for our annual Kentucky Lobby Day. Participants met with their state senators and representatives in support of our heart-health policy priorities.

In addition to meeting with legislators, volunteers gathered for a rally in the Rotunda where the Mustang Movers, a jump rope team from Georgetown, treated participants to a wonderful performance. Our little Brave Hearts were also honored with a proclamation for Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Day. Later, the First Lady also took time out of her busy schedule to meet with the Brave Hearts survivors and their families. Thanks to those meetings, your emails and phone calls, we were able to double Kentucky’s cigarette excise tax to help reduce smoking among our price-sensitive youth. You truly ARE the Cure!

In Delaware, we’re gearing up for an active legislative session on many fronts! First, we are poised to support a drive for strong menu labeling legislation this year. We firmly believe consumers must have calorie information in order to make informed choices when eating out. How are you to know that a Chicken Caesar Salad from a popular Italian restaurant has more fat and calories than the Sausage and Chicken Pasta? We expect this issue to get a lot of attention and look forward to helping people make healthier decisions.

All of our policy issues will be front and center on Delaware Lobby Day, on April 8th. We expect to have some productive and enlightening conversations with Delaware’s elected officials about our heart health issues. If you’re interested in joining us, please email us at deladv@heart.org. We look forward to fighting heart disease and stroke with you by our side!

Welcome to the online home for American Heart Association advocacy in the Great Rivers Affiliate! The Great Rivers Affiliate includes Delaware, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

We update regularly about our ongoing legislative issues (for example: tobacco prevention and cessation, childhood obesity, nutrition, stroke and STEMI systems of care, etc). We hope this blog proves to be a resource to keep our amazing advocates up-to-date with our fast-paced legislative happenings!

You don't have to be a doctor to save lives - just an advocate with the American Heart Association and its division the American Stroke Association. In just a few moments, you can make a huge difference. All you have to do is respond to the issues and action alerts that you feel are important.
