HEART for Women Act Co-Sponsors
You're the Cure GRA
On Tuesday, March 27, 2012
Heartfelt thanks to Representative Marcy Kaptur from Ohio, Representative Jim Gerlach from Pennsylvania, and Representative Todd Platts from Pennsylvania for co-sponsoring the HEART for Women Act and working to reduce the devastating effects of heart disease and stroke in women.
An increasing number of women are developing heart disease, making it the No. 1 killer of women. The HEART for Women Act aims to reduce death and disability from cardiovascular diseases in women by making sure it's more widely recognized and effectively treated. The bill would also expand the WISEWOMAN program, which provides access to screening and lifestyle counseling for low-income, underinsured and uninsured women.
Go to Women and Heart Disease to learn more and to join our efforts to help pass this bill to improve women's health.

Heart Attack Symptoms in Women
You're the Cure GRA
On Friday, February 17, 2012
Heart attack warning signs in women can be different than men. Even though heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, women often chalk up the symptoms to less life-threatening conditions like acid reflux, the flu or normal aging. Even when the signs are subtle, the consequences can be deadly, especially if the victim doesn’t get help right away. Heart disease is preventable. Learn More

Help us stop our No. 1 killer, GoRedForWomen.org
- Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women, taking the life of one woman every minute.
- More women die of heart disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
- Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
- The facts are clear. More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, the killer isn’t as easy to see. Heart disease is often silent, hidden and misunderstood.

Study finds racial gaps continue in heart disease awareness, low knowledge of heart attack warning signs among women
You're the Cure GRA
On Monday, April 12, 2010
Study highlights
In addition, most women lacked knowledge of evidence-based therapies for preventing cardiovascular disease, and half of women ages 25-34 were unaware of heart disease as women’s No. 1 killer, demonstrating the need for prevention education to avert death and disability from heart disease.
To read more about this study, click here.
- Minority women’s awareness remains behind that of white women.
- Only about half of women were aware of heart attack warning signs or said they would dial 9-1-1 if they thought they were having heart attack symptoms.
- Most women surveyed listed therapies to prevent cardiovascular disease that are not evidence-based.
- American Heart Association rapid access journal report
Racial gaps exist in women’s heart-health awareness, women’s knowledge of heart attack warning signs requires attention and nearly half of women report they would not call 9-1-1 if they were having heart attack symptoms, according to new research published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, a journal of the American Heart Association.
Results of the study, commissioned by the American Heart Association, revealed that although 60 percent of white women were aware of heart disease as the leading cause of death for women, less than half of African-American (43 percent), Hispanic (44 percent) and Asian (34 percent) women identified heart disease as the leading cause.
